I've only had the Archos 5 for about a month, but so far it is doing all I expected and doing it well. It is fairly big and heavy but that is the price you pay for the screen size and capacity. There have been some complaints about the plug-ins, but you will find them on Ebay and won't stretch the budget. Good presets on the equalizer and a custom setting, tons of web radio stations and some weird web tv stations. I've put on some DVDs as well as a homemade vacation DVD and they look great. The latest version of flash is not available and I don't know if it will be updated, since Archos is now focusing on android and windows 7. So You Tube isn't available unless you put it on your home computer and convert it before putting it on the archos. Haven't tried getting on the internet at Mickey Ds, etc., but I will assume it wont work with the flash it has. The volume could be a problem with some earbuds. I have one pair (my favorite) where moderate volume takes 3/4 of the volume setting. The other buds I use would bore a hole through your skull at top volume.
This is probably at a clearance price due to the android model. I read an article comparing the two and I don't see much difference other than the android being a few seconds faster and having a newer version of flash. For the savings, I'll take this one.

Okay, I'm gonna say this first: I didn't buy this to browse the web with. I tried browsing the web and really, I can do better with my Samsung Instinct s30. What it is good at is storing things, playing music, keeping notes, playing high quality video, and staying alive while you do all of that.
Pros: 250 GIGS of storage!!, long battery life, low price comparatively to any other MP3 players, plays video quite well, touch pad is surprisingly accurate.
Cons: You have to buy plugins to play certain files including .aac*, web browser is slow, some complex flash things (like Hulu) don't seem to work, and the navigation isn't AS smooth as an iPod's but it comes DAMN CLOSE.
The bottom line: it's a hella good deal for what it is. It's 250 gigs for 220 bucks. An iPod classic that doesn't do everything that it does and only has 160 gigs of storage is 250 bucks. An iPod touch that does everything that it does but only has 64 gigs of storage is 400 bucks.
Sure, it may be a bit bigger than an iPod. But it's certainly worth the price, storage, and battery life that you get from it. Over all, it's a really good deal.
*If you are an iTunes user like I am, then your music ripped from CDs will most likely be in .aac format. Fret not, you need not buy the plugin! Go into iTunes and then go to: Edit>Preferences>General>Import Settings and then change from .aac to .mp3

I purchased the Archos 5 250 GB on Amazon.com on 12/4/09, listed as brand new unit on Amazon.com. I received the Archos 5 a few days later, charged up the battery, watch the demo video and the preloaded pictures, the image on the demo video and the preloaded pictures look great, I was happy with it.
I loaded some of my own pictures, everything is still fine at that time, but after a few time using it, I noticed there are some red, green lines outlining the image on the LCD screen, at first I thought it is the quality of my own pictures, but it is the same when I go back and watch the demo video and the preloaded pictures, Then I realized it is the unit that has problem. (I was so careful handling it and it was never drop or hit by any hard object)
I did not do anything at the time due to I was leaving the next day to Europe for 3 weeks, I just returned and now will have to deal with the headache to have it fix
Since I already have problem with it after a few use, I am only giving it a one star rating

I purchased the Archos 5 IMT for myself for Xmas. Although I had higher expectations for the device, it is remarkably powerful for such a portable $200 PMP. It is slower than my desktop, but more responsive than many laptops.
Screen quality is perfect. Capacity is outstanding. Elegant design. Very portable; as long as your jeans are not skin tight they will fit in most pockets. WIFI works great.
There are a few limitations with which I can easily live. The Opera browser isn't as customizable as I would want it to be. I haven't gotten the email client to work yet; but that's probably just me. I never opened the earbuds because I never expect the free ones to be worth while.
If all you expect is a great video/picture viewer with enormous capacity, a very usable portable web browser, mp3 player, etc., then the Archos 5 imt is well worth the money. I think I made a great purchase. A++++++++++++

My experience in tech include: Music production, operating DSLR and Video Cameras, designing client file interface in management software, and programming. I was an audiophile: Nordost Valhalla PC and IC, ADAM S2A, Meridian 808 Reference CD Player, etc...
**The FLAC update:
More than I expected: I didn't think it was going play FLAC, but it turns out that ARCHOS made an update a few month ago that enabled FLAC. They didn't even bother to change the spec of the player. I almost didn't buy it because I didn't think it play FLAC.
**Very customizable:
Can choose stop playing options, EX: stop playing after 1. one song 2.one folder 3. entire hard driver.
Can choose how the MP3 player shows up through USB connection: 1. as media device 2.as a hard drive, etc...
**Touch Screen
Great, like NDSi. The touch screen is extremely responsive and precise. (IPhone 3GS, Droid, and now N1 User) The folder view is my favorite. With the 'back' button, scroll function, navigating between songs is a breeze.
**Design features
Resume playing from where you stopped before shutting down, after power up again.
Fast forward button works well, precise forward upon quick touch, and accelerates almost immediately. (Who does not hate those buttons that does not accelerate?)
**Music collection
I'm using the ARCHOS 5 as the Music Player in my car, through the AUX-input. It is almost perfect. For those busy individuals who have a lot of songs on their computers that they haven't heard, this is a great item to get. I am sure I will get to know my music collection better because now I can do that anywhere.
